Grace Student Killed in Ohio

Posted by Terry White on September 23, 2006  |  No Comments

September 23, 2006:

This is a special edition of the Grace Connection sent from the campus of Grace College and Seminary.

Grace College received word yesterday from the Ohio State police that one of our students, Joseph Ross, 19, was killed in a car accident near Wapakoneta, Ohio, between 9 and 10 a.m.

Joe was a freshman residential student from Locust Grove, Virginia. His sister, Heather, and brother-in-law, Pete Gross, are both graduates of Grace.

Pete writes: “We can rest in the fact that he was a Christian and is now with our glorious Lord; however, it is still difficult to handle as we all wish our time with him here was not so quickly taken.”

Our campus family extends our deepest sympathy and prayers to the Ross family in this time of great need. Our students and employees will gather on Monday morning at 10 in McClain Hall for a time of prayer on behalf of Joe’s family.

Please join us in prayer for the Ross family – and for our campus – in this time of great loss.

Jay and Deb Pause to do Laundry

Posted by Terry White on September 22, 2006  |  No Comments

Jay and Deb Hocking, whose three-month “Walk of the St. James Way” across France and Spain is in progress, today sent the following report:

We’re in Saintes today, after having walked about 550km since we started. Today we’re taking a day off to see the town, catch up on e-mail, and just relax, since we’ve been doing pretty well as far as keeping up with our schedule.

This picture is of the two of us doing laundry in one of the old “lavoirs” along the way – since on the days that we camp out we don’t always have sinks available to do our laundry.

We’ve really been enjoying the walk, at least most days. The further we go, the more visible the Saint James way becomes. A few days ago, there even started to be way markers for it, so we can follow those instead of trying to pick our own way down south (although we just found out that the markers don’t go all the way to Spain).

We’ve also started to meet other people who are on the pilgrimage – last night we invited two fellow travelers to have dinner with us – a French man who was walking back north after walking all the way down to Santiago, and an American who isn’t exactly doing the pilgrimage, but is riding an old bicycle all over France (we actually met him a few days ago, then ran into him again yesterday).

Thanks for your prayers as we have chances to meet people and spend time with them.

Two Authors and an Editor Meet

Posted by Terry White on September 20, 2006  |  No Comments

BMH Senior Editor Jesse Delow (left), along with BMH Books author Tom Julien (center) met the other day with Kary Oberbrunner of the Powell, Ohio, church. Tom’s book Antioch Revisited is one of BMH’s newest products, and Kary’s book Called is now in edit and will appear before the first of the year.

Here is an excerpt from Kary’s blog on the meeting:

Yesterday, I met with Tom Julien and Jesse Deloe. They came down from Indiana in order to learn more about Grace Institute. Their church, Winona Lake GBC, has a vision to become an equipping church. They have organized their staff around the five-fold gifting in Ephesians 4 (prophet, apostle, pastor, evangelist, and teacher).

The election process has been completed for the Board of Trustees for Grace College and Seminary, Winona Lake, Indiana.

This was an unusual year in that there was only one incumbent, John Gregory, on the ballot. The other incumbents had reached term limit (five elected three-year terms, or 15 years) or for personal reasons had asked not to be nominated again. Those going off the Board were: Tom Avey, Ray Davis, Ralph Fitz, Gordon Stover, and Mike Workman.

There were seven new nominees approved by the Board and the corporation membership. All nominees were elected.

New members elected for a three-year term are: Brook Avey (Indianapolis, IN), Bill Burke (Dublin, OH), Charlie Kreider (Lancaster, PA), Janet Minnix (Roanoke, VA), Stefanie Pappas (Bluffton, IN), Todd Scoles (Dublin, OH), and Bob Vitoux (formerly of Warsaw, now living in Inverness, Scotland).

New members have been invited to the November 2-4 board meetings. A communication from the school noted, “We are pleased with the breadth of experience and insight this year’s elected trustees will bring to the Board.”

WLGBC Staff Clarification

Posted by Terry White on September 20, 2006  |  No Comments

Several questions have been raised since the appearance in the most recent issue of FGBC World the announcement that Grace Brethren International Mission personnel Kip Cone, Jay Bell, and Tom Julien have joined the staff of Winona Lake (IN) Grace Brethren Church as part-time pastoral staff.

Since GBIM personnel are supported missionaries in their role with the mission, it is important to note that the roles these three men are taking at the Winona Lake church are all voluntary–there are no salary or benefits being paid by the church to Cone, Bell, or Julien.

The church is grateful that these talented men choose to use their gifts to serve the local church where they belong, but since the roles are volunteer there is still a need for churches and individuals to support the GBIM personnel with their prayers and gifts.

Tribute to Joyce Ashman From Janet Minnix

Posted by Terry White on September 20, 2006  |  1 Comment

Janet Minnix of Roanoke, Virginia, is president of the Women of Grace USA, the women’s organization of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches. Upon hearing of the death of Joyce Ashman, she sent the following tribute:

Joyce Ashman of Winona Lake, Indiana, who served for 33 years as national Financial Secretary-Treasurer for Women of Grace USA (WMC), passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 19, 2006.

In God’s infinite wisdom, He said to her, “Your work on earth is done. I want you with me.” He must have greeted her with “Well done, good and faithful servant,” upon her arrival at His side, for Joyce was a good and faithful servant in the work of His kingdom.

Joyce was a humble, behind-the-scenes person who served her church and community in countless ways. She was actively involved in Women of Grace on the local level, as well as serving as a national officer.

But even after her retirement from national responsibilities in 2004, she continued to prepare mailings, fill orders, and serve the national Leadership Team when they met in Winona Lake. She also ministered to girls through SMM; in recent years, she has been involved with the outreach SMM at Jefferson School, where she worked as school secretary. She was always ready to help wherever she was needed, and did so cheerfully and joyfully.

Joyce will be deeply missed by all of us in Women of Grace, but we celebrate her life as one who gave generously of herself to minister to others.

She was a faithful servant in the Body of Christ, and we thank God for the privilege we had of serving with her.

Joyce Ashman Service Set for Friday at 2 p.m.

Posted by Terry White on September 20, 2006  |  1 Comment

A memorial service for Joyce Ashman, who died yesterday, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 22 at the Winona Lake (IN) Grace Brethren Church. Here, in a recent photo taken for the WLGBC photo directory, Joyce is doing one of the ministries she loved best–holding babies and taking care of children in the church’s nursery.

Miriam Pacheco, Joyce’s sister, said in a memo circulated to family and friends, “Many of you have already heard that Joyce passed away driving her car to work. She had a brain hemorrhage and the car veered off the left side of the road and hit a light pole. It happened on Kings Highway just in front of Mount Memorial and Indiana Hall. Praise the Lord that no other cars or pedestrians were right there!

“The EMS took her to the hospital because she was unresponsive at the accident scene. While she was in the ER her heart stopped. I am so thankful that she did not linger, and probably she didn’t even know that she veered into the light pole.

“We are sad and have shed our share of tears and will shed more in the days to come. But we have the glorious hope and the confidence that Joyce is in the presence of her Saviour and is enjoying a wonderful reunion with our loved ones who were waiting for her.”

Viewing hours at the Titus Funeral Home on Sheridan Street in Warsaw, Indiana, will be Thursday, September 21 from 6-8 p.m., and Friday, September 22, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. There will be a graveside service Friday morning and the memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Friday, September 22 at the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church.

Joyce Ashman With the Lord

Posted by Terry White on September 19, 2006  |  1 Comment

Joyce Ashman of Winona Lake, Indiana, died at about 8:15 a.m. today following a vehicle accident on Kings Highway in Winona Lake in front of the Grace College Mount Memorial Hall building.

Fire and police officials were clearing wreckage as area residents came to work this morning and word came from Kosciusko County Hospital of her passing about 8:45 a.m. Early speculation was that she encountered a medical problem which caused the accident.

Joyce, the daughter of the late Robert Ashman, and sister of Miriam Pacheco, was well-known in FGBC circles for her many years of employment at Grace Schools, where she worked in the business office from 1961-1990, and at Jefferson Elementary School and for her work with SMM and WMC (Women of Grace USA) activities and at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church.

More details will be forthcoming.

Overnight, the Largest Church in Milton

Posted by Terry White on September 18, 2006  |  No Comments

This past Sunday the Village Church launched in Milton, Ontario, as the FGBC’s newest church-plant. Here is a small portion of a minute-by-minute report of the morning by Pastor Rob Stanley:

10:05 – 5 minutes after our proposed start time, about 45 adults are in the theatre (which holds 305)
10:06 – I leave the theatre to grab the house band to start the service and I am greeted with the sight of about 250 people milling about, registering their children and grabbing a coffee
10:07 – we decide to delay the start of the service to let people get in
10:15 – the service begins
10:18 – following our first set of songs, Mat has to pause to allow people to filter in (there’s a back-up in the aisle)
10:25 – Mat pauses again to allow people to be seated….needs to ask people to squeeze together to find room
10:45 – our key media element works, and I begin speaking
11:30’ish – the service ends and people begin filing out 11:35-12:00 – I meet ‘n’ greet over 50 people in the lobby, and we all walk around with a bit of a glazed look in our eyes
12:05 – the final numbers come in…
-261 adults
-82 children
-343 total people (not including our volunteer helpers)
12:15 – my van won’t start again J
We are a little blown away right now with everything…but I must say it’s pretty cool.
Overnight, we became the largest church in Milton, and it was truly the result of a great amount of effort and faith on the part of people like yourselves.

Hagerstown Grace Childcare Celebrates 25 Years

Posted by Terry White on September 17, 2006  |  No Comments

The following article appears in today’s Hagerstown (MD) Herald-Mail (Herald-Mail photo by Ric Dugan).

Child-care center celebrates 25th

The Christian-based center at Grace Brethren Church serves children ages 2 to 6.

by CANDICE BOSELY candiceb@herald-mail.com

Sharon Brake likes to flip through the newspaper, looking for familiar faces. She has countless clippings in folders and on the walls near her office, with certain faces circled.

They’re the pictures of children who have attended Grace Child Care Center at Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown.

The child-care center is celebrating its 25th anniversary of being in business. An open house and reception were scheduled to be held today from noon to 3 p.m. Former students were encouraged to attend.

Brake, the center’s director, said the child-care center was opened because of a need in the community.

“I definitely think it would be nice if mothers could stay at home with their children, but that was not possible so we wanted to provide” a service that would fill a need, said Brake, who has worked at the center for 18 years.

The center, which serves children ages 2 to 6, currently has an enrollment of 43. It has a staff of nine and is open year-round from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Two snacks are provided each day.

Children learn “dramatic play” through activities such as painting, using crayons or playing house or dress-up; they have play time; they develop fine muscle skills using puzzles or crafts; and take part in a daily Bible time.

“We try to do social, emotional and cognitive as well as physical and spiritual. We try to teach all areas,” Brake said.

Children also learn of consequences, boundaries and self-control.

“It’s about right choices versus wrong choices. We don’t use (the word) bad,” Brake said.

The child-care center, at 837 Spruce St., has several classrooms, a playground and an indoor play area. There also are plenty of toys, and several Noah’s Ark models were on the shelves.

Children are grouped based on age.

On a recent tour of the center, youngsters were sleeping on individual cots; a state requirement of child-care centers is that nap time be provided. Soothing music played quietly.

“We don’t call ourselves a preschool, but we could be considered a preschool because of (the) alphabet, shapes, the things we teach,” Brake said.

The school might be different from others in that all employees must be Christians.

Every aspect of the child-care center is Christian-based, said Dean P. Pryor, a pastor at the church. He used as an example the prayers that are said before all snack times.

“I guess a Christian world- view is the best way to put it,” he said.

Artwork that children make is displayed on the walls and Brake said employees try to focus on each child’s strengths and talents.

She said that several years ago one boy seemed to excel at Wiffle ball; later in high school he was a member of the All-County baseball team.

“We try to see the individual child. I know it’s a large group, but we try to see the individual needs,” Brake said. “You encourage things you see in them.”

The center has a few basic rules for children who attend.

“Our three simple rules are, be kind to yourself, be kind to your friends and be kind to your things,” said Brake, elaborating that the last rule is designed to prevent children from throwing or breaking objects.

Brake started out at the center as a teacher before being named director in February 2004.

“I consider it a ministry as well as a job,” Brake said.

Pryor said he was pleased that attending the child-care center helped his son, Caleb, to “come out of his shell” and be less shy.

Pryor popped a cassette into a VCR in his office to show his son’s performance at an annual holiday concert at the church.

Rates for the child-care center are assessed daily.

Being a member of the church is not a requirement to enroll a child, although church members receive a 20 percent discount.

The center costs $22.22 a day, with a discount if more than one child from a family is enrolled. Attending for a half-day costs $17.76. State vouchers are accepted.

The center is at 837 Spruce St.

Ohio Senate President Integrates Faith, Politics

Posted by Terry White on September 17, 2006  |  No Comments

Today’s Columbus (OH) Dispatch carries an article entitled “Faith Shapes Political Views” which features, among other Ohio politicians Senator Bill Harris (pictured) of the 19th district, who attends the Grace Brethren Church of Ashland (Dan Allan, pastor). Here is a brief excerpt–to read the entire article click here.

Some say the state budget is a reflection of the morals of those who craft it.

“In reality, it’s a document that sets forth a sense of responsibility for the legislature to do all that it can to support the needs of Ohioans,” said Senate President Bill M. Harris, a Republican who attends Grace Brethren Church in Ashland. “You know you can’t fix and resolve all of the challenges.”

Other than a Bible on a desk, you won’t find evidence of religion around Harris’ office. “I don’t need a cross here, because I know Christ is here.” But the soft-spoken, retired Marine firmly believes that his faith in Jesus and eternal salvation shapes him and his desire to be an elected servant.

“I think that faith then causes me to be the type of person that Christ would want me to be,” he said. Harris, who has led Wednesday morning Bible study sessions on Capitol Square since 1995, highlights budget decisions to restore funding for the Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps, to help children’s hospitals and restore some of the proposed Medicaid cuts.

Harris sees religion permeating many, if not all of his decisions. On tax reform: “If I was doing that just to benefit Bill Harris, my conscience would have a terrible time.” On gay rights: “I think the Bible is clear that homosexuality is not what Christ wants us to do.”
