Followers Baptized at Los Altos Grace Brethren Church

Posted by Liz Cutler Gates on April 30, 2009  |  No Comments

From Pastor Mike Jentes at the Los Altos, Calif., Grace Brethren Church comes this report of a baptism service that was held on Sunday. At right, Senior Pastor Phil Helfer prays with a young man. Click here for more photos of the day.

What a day of rejoicing we had together! 18 people told the world that they want to follow Jesus! And another 13 people followed Jesus command to be “baptizers of disciples” from Matthew 28:19-20. It was a beautiful day! The sun was out, the Son was glorified and the food & fellowship were great!

One important notice: the Evil One took note of what happened on Sunday. As is his custom, he ramps up the difficulty and suffering in the moments after a Christian takes a stride of obedience. This ought not shock us!

Our Jesus has overcome the Evil One and makes His disciples overcomers…but please be about the work of loving and praying for these precious “children of God” who made a declaration to the world about following Jesus! It will make an eternal difference!

Writers Needed for Conference Newsrooms

Posted by Liz Cutler Gates on April 29, 2009  |  No Comments

Volunteer opportunities are available for writers within the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches (FGBC). Consider using your journalism and reporting skills to help document the two largest conferences in the fellowship.

Reporters are needed to write stories at:
· Momentum (Brethren National Youth Conference), Monday, July 13-Sunday, July 19, Pittsburgh, Pa. (www.buildmomentum.org/)
· Equip 09 (annual conference of the FGBC), Sunday, July 26-Friday, July 31, Columbus, Ohio (www.equip09.com)

What’s involved?
Be available to write stories throughout each week, either as assigned by the communications director or stories you develop.

At Equip09, you’ll be asked to write five to ten stories of varying lengths. These will be used on the BMH Editor’s Blog, FGBC World, and the FGBC e-newsletter. They will also be used on the Internet during the week of conference.

At Momentum, it is requested you write 10 to 15 stories of 150 to 200 words. These will be used on the Momentum website and with CE National promotions. (See guidelines below.)

Stories could include:
· Human interest features
· Coverage of events
· Man-on-the-Street interviews
· Follow a youth group for a day
· Personality profiles
· Follow-up to a session or events
· Leadership training events
· Whatever else you see is newsworthy!

You may be free to develop stories for your own publication, but it should be unique from what you write for the respective conference.

Church communicators may be interested in participating in Equip 09 track designed especially for you, but conference fees will apply. (If you participate in this session but would still like to write, contact Liz Gates, lcgates@bmhbooks.com.)

If you are interested in leading a workshop or seminar in your area of expertise, such as writing, interviewing, etc., during Equip09, contact Tom Avey, tomavey@fgbc.org.

Skills needed:
· Experience and ability to write in a news or feature style
· Computer skills (Computers will be available at Momentum. You’ll need to bring your own laptop to Equip.)
· Digital photography skills for photos to accompany stories (bring your own camera)

Compensation:
The volunteer services you provide to the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches (including the Brethren Missionary Herald Company) and CE National are invaluable. Documenting the events of both conferences will help encourage prayer support; report on proceedings; promote networking, partnership, and fellowship; record activities for historical reference; and promote future events.

At both conferences, we ask that you provide your own transportation to and from the events. At Equip09, you may attend any public session at no charge and housing is available in a local home. Meals and transportation (and lodging, if you choose a hotel) will be your responsibility. See the Momentum information sheet (below) regarding that conference.

Contact Liz Cutler Gates at lcgates@bmhbooks.com or call 574-268-1122 if you are interested in participating in Equip09 or have questions.

Posted by Terry White on April 28, 2009  |  No Comments

Pastor Galen Wiley from Lancaster, PA, has forwarded this information and prayer request from the family of Bob and Jeanne Smoker of Wrightsville, PA. Bob is the pastor of Susquehanna Grace Brethren Church, and his son and daughter-in-law were in the motorcycle accident on Saturday.

Bob Smoker just called me with the information on the memorial service for his daughter-in-law Michelle Smoker, who was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on Saturday evening. Her husband Dan was able to come home from the hospital on Saturday evening, but he is obviously devastated because he was driving the motorcycle.

Michelle and her family are believers, so there is a peace that she is home with the Lord. But the emotions are still very painful at this time of loss and separation.

The memorial service will be this Friday at 2:00, following a time to visitation with the family from 12-2.

The location is at the:

Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Home
35 Gotham Drive
Red Lion, PA 17356
Phone Number: (717) 244-6991

Bob and Jean Smoker’s address is
8 Christine Dr
Wrightsville, PA 17368

Their email is smok1@verizon.net.

I know the entire family would appreciate our prayers so much at this time.

GBIM Sponsors Day of Focus on Integrated Ministries

Posted by Terry White on April 26, 2009  |  1 Comment

Keith Shearer, pastor of New Beginnings Grace Brethren Church in Myerstown, Pa., and chair of the board of Grace Brethren International Missions, was one of two speakers today in a day-long session for GBIM board members, national organization and Fellowship leaders, and invited guests. The sessions were held at the Russell Center on the CE National campus in Winona Lake, Indiana.

The “Day of Reflection” was built around discussion of the third section of the Commitment to Common Mission document that emanated from the Charis gathering of worldwide Grace Brethren fellowship leaders this past summer in Bad Homburg, Germany.

In the first segment, Shearer discussed misconceptions about the ability to hold to a “pre-70th Week” view of eschatology and affirm the “Integrated Ministries” portion of the Charis document at the same time. In the second presentation, Grace College & Seminary president Dr. Ron Manahan laid the biblical foundation for integrated ministries, stressing that it is an essential component of a biblical worldview. In the final segment Shearer examined the work of Walter Rauschenbusch, known as the “father of the social gospel,” pointing out dangers of that movement and stressing the need for balance. The day concluded with small-group discussions and a Q&A time by both presenters.

The meeting was held in conjunction with the spring meetings of the GBIM board, and the day was moderated by GBIM executive director Dave Guiles. For more information on the Commitment to Common Mission, click here.

God’s Working at Grace College

Posted by Terry White on April 25, 2009  |  No Comments

E. Scott Feather, dean of the chapel and global ministries at Grace College, Winona Lake, Indiana, has posted on his blog some very touching video from a Grace College chapel service held earlier this week. Here, in his own words, is a little of the background to the “cardboard testimonies.”

God did amazing things at Grace College last week…

We did “cardboard testimonies” – this is not a novel idea, but it seemed to fit our theme of the week which was “What’s Your Story?” We had 28 people ready to share part of their story by walking on stage and telling part of their story, part of the story that God is writing in their lives, without saying a word. These brave students set the stage and provided “space” for the Spirit to move in the lives of the rest of the campus.

Coming into chapel that day, we gave each student an 8″ x8″ piece of cardboard. What you will NOT see in the video below was the response we received from the students… after what you see in the video they starting coming in droves and did not stop coming the full 45 minutes of chapel.

Almost 500 students came forward and laid their “story” at the front, symbolically stating that they are giving their story to God and allowing him to “right the wrongs” in their life. Almost 500 students, we only had a little over 700 in chapel that day. I hope to be able to post some of the footage of the students responding.

What a great week . . . A week like I have not seen at Grace College in my 18 years!

God is good!

Tribute Honors Wanda Dalke, 82, of Whittier

Posted by Terry White on April 25, 2009  |  No Comments

Here is a personalized tributed to a longtime member of Community Grace Brethren Church in Whittier, California. To read the entire article, click here.

Whittier’s Wanda Dalke, aka ‘Ca Ca Lady,’ dies

By Bill Bell, Correspondent

WHITTIER – Wanda Goodall Dalke had a good sense of humor. She must have thought God doesn’t mind a little humor now and then. She probably knows for sure now. She died April 10 (Good Friday), following a stroke. She was 82. . .

. . . Now, following her death, I know far more about her than ever before.

The two main things I have learned is: 1) That she and her husband, Cornelius (Corky) Dalke, who she wed in 1950, graduated from a religious university, Columbia International University, intent on becoming missionaries in Argentina and 2) Before they embarked, they learned that Mrs. Dalke had neurofibromatosis, a rare lifelong condition that was to eventually include their two sons yet to be born.

The malady involves small tumors that can spread over the whole body just under the skin.

After their missionary plans could not be realized, Dalke’s husband became a career emloyee of Southern California Edison Co. and she devoted her attention to local church work and writing.

She was very devout, turning her telephone off two hours daily for prayer. She wrote two childrens’ stories and a book of poetry and taught Sunday school to fifth-grade girls at their church.

Dalke has been a member of Community Grace Brethren Church in west Whittier for nearly 50 years.

Her husband died Sept. 3, 1982.

One of her best friends at church was Caroline Peak.

She said, “I had a great deal of respect for Wanda, especially in spiritual matters. She was very well versed in the Bible.”

Ripon Church Member Goes Outside the Box for Cancer Research

Posted by Liz Cutler Gates on April 24, 2009  |  No Comments

Carol Bauman, right, a member of the Ripon, Calif., Grace Brethren Church (Glen Shirk, pastor), is featured in Thursday’s (April 23) Manteca, Calif., Bulletin. A cancer survivor, she is planning a paper shredding event with proceeds going to Ripon’s Relay for Life. To read the whole story, click here.

Shredding old receipts Saturday for Relay for Life

RIPON — Going outside the box for cancer research in Ripon actually equates to shredding what is inside the box for a $10 donation to the American Cancer Society as part of Ripon’s Relay for Life event set for mid-May at the Ripon High football stadium.

Carol Bauman works at the medical offices of Doctors Dutter, Hufford and Daley at 150 Vera Avenue where she is planning to hold a paper shredding event on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot where a Shred-It truck will be located.

The $10 donation is for the shredding of one banker’s size box of paperwork. In inches, that’s 10×12-15. For additional information call 599-2520.

Bauman is a cancer survivor as are her two sisters. Her mother died of ovarian cancer.

She was shocked just three weeks ago when her younger sister was diagnosed with the dreaded disease. …

“Cancer is my life insurance policy,” she said, “because I am going to be here for what it has made me.” Her cancer survival of five years has brought devotion to others and to the cancer society as well. “My faith in God and in healing is so important,” she said.

She also works quietly as a tutor in English as a Second Language (ESL) program working with a Spanish student. Others who speak Chinese, Taiwanese and Portuguese are also learning English in the class.

A member of Ripon’s Grace Brethren Church, Bauman also volunteers at the Modesto Pregnancy Center a few hours a week using her half day off on Thursdays.

Soldier Responds to Life’s Most Important Question

Posted by Liz Cutler Gates on April 24, 2009  |  No Comments

Grace Brethren Chaplain (First Lieutenant) Jeff Mason is currently stationed in Iraq with the 157th Combat Service and Support Brigade. He sent a report this week from the field, where it is 95 degrees and getting warmer. His company anticipates returning to the U.S. in three months.

The ministry is going very well. I have had a lot of opportunities to talk with David. He is one of my soldiers who has been going through a lot of difficult issues. The other night he came to me to talk around midnight and we ended up talking until almost 2 a.m.

Please continue praying for him. One night as I talked with him we got onto the subject of God and I asked him if he were to stand before God and was asked why he should be let into heaven. He was not able to give me an answer. I went through the booklet “Life’s Most Important Question.” After going through it and coming to the page with the prayer we spend some time talking about it. He then told me that he had prayed to receive Christ when he was younger. But because of some situations growing up he rarely got to church. I read to him some verses so that he could know with confidence that he was saved. I rejoiced that night knowing that he had accepted Christ.

He and his wife have been talking about the desire to find a church and attend regularly. Please pray that they will find one when they get to Colorado (that is where his next assignment is). Please also pray for both of them (David and Liz). They both have gone through some terrible events that they are trying to deal with. Pray that Liz will be able to find someone that she can talk with. Pray that I will be able to continue to spend time with David. He has opened up a lot to me and we have a close friendship.
Pray also for my soldiers as some of them get ready to go home. My company and one other company will be leaving within 1 week of each other. Pray for smooth transitions.

Thanks, Dennis–You Just Made Our Day!

Posted by Terry White on April 23, 2009  |  1 Comment

Ever wonder if you’re making any difference?

Does the daily grind seem pointless sometimes?

Even if you love your job, would you like to get a little “extra reward” now and then?

We got one this morning.

The phone rang at Brethren Missionary Herald Company and Ann answered. It was Dennis on the phone, calling from Florida. He wanted to order 125 copies of our venerable tract, “Life’s Most Important Question.” 75 copies of the KJV version, and 50 in Spanish.

He told us his sister had sent the tract to him years ago. He said, “I came across it this morning, I read it, and I just accepted Jesus as my Savior.”

He was so excited he wanted to share with others. Dennis, 62, said he “has had a rough background” that included being in prison and “some things I’m not real proud of.”

But now he’s in the Kingdom.

Because of a tract.

BMH has published more than 5 million copies of “Life’s Most Important Question” over the years in versions that include NIV, KJV, and Spanish. You can find out more about it by clicking here.

Please pray right now for Dennis’ spiritual growth, will you? He made OUR day, and the Bible tells us that heaven is rejoicing, as well.

Clearview, Ohio Church-Plant, Update

Posted by Terry White on April 22, 2009  |  No Comments

ClearView is a brand new Grace Brethren church in northeastern Franklin County, Ohio, being planted by Andy and Trish Wirt.

The Wirts moved to the New Albany/Gahanna area in February of 2007 and began making contacts and working to gather a group of people together to work toward a Grand Opening for ClearView Church in the fall of 2009. ClearView’s goal is to find “25 To Thrive” (25 families to work towards a new church) by fall of 2009.

Church-planter Andy Wirt writes, “I was very thankful for our gathering yesterday (4/19). There is always such a good spirit among our ClearView family and I just enjoy being around everyone. There is a genuine care for one another and a willingness to love and serve that is contagious.

“Our worship, prayer time, and discussion around Colossians 1 moved me. We also had a strong attendance and several guests, three separate family units, which is always encouraging. I was particularly excited about a friend of mine from the community that came, enjoyed her time with us, and said she’d be back! I had an exciting conversation with her last week–the best kind of interaction–talking about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.

“I always find my own journey with Jesus is enriched when God gives an opportunity to talk with someone else about the complete love and hope we find in a relationship with Jesus.”

Ohio Church Plant Has Three Prayer Requests

Posted by Terry White on April 22, 2009  |  No Comments

Sterling Grace is a Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches church plant in Mt. Sterling, southern Madison County, Ohio. The church has a local pastor and is slowly growing.

Currently, the church meets Sunday nights in the Mt. Sterling Community Center, but it is making preparations to launch Sunday morning services in the autumn. Pastor Mac Cordell requests prayer in three specific areas.

First, the church is praying for a new family a month, in whatever form God chooses to send that family and regardless of what the family looks like (married, single, widowed, children, no children, young, old).

Second, the church is praying for a worship leader – someone who can walk congregants into the presence of the Lord using various forms of worship (prayer, song, offering, readings).

Finally, the church is praying for a leader of the childrens’ ministry – a mature Christian or Christian couple that truly feels this is their ministry and realizes this is possibly the most important ministry the church offers. The pastor sees the children and youth leader to be as important to the Kingdom as any pastor or missionary.

Cordell says, “We know the harvest is planted but the workers are few. We’re asking that you join us in beseeching the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into His harvest.”

For more information about Sterling Grace, feel free to contact Pastor Mac Cordell at (614) 893-0035 or martin.andrew.cordell@gmail.com.

DeYoung to Lead Rafting Astronomy/Geology Trip

Posted by Terry White on April 22, 2009  |  No Comments

Don DeYoung, Ph.D. (pictured), one of the world’s leading creation scientists, will head “Rocks by Day, Stars by Night,” a 190-mile rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon June 5–11.

The rafters will encounter all the major rapids and geological points of interest along the river during the day, and in the evenings Dr. DeYoung will teach astronomy, using a telescope for participants to see details of the created heavens. Accompanying Dr. DeYoung on the trip will be Carl Kerby, vice president of the sponsoring organization, Answers in Genesis.

Dr. DeYoung is professor of physics at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, and holds his Ph.D. in physics from Iowa State University. He has taught at Grace College for 37 years and is known for his gift of explaining complicated issues in an understandable way, whether his audience is a college class, adults, or children.

His work has taken him around the world, from Nova Scotia and Europe to Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga, where he has taught, conducted research, and pursued busy speaking schedules. He is president of the Creation Research Society, a professional society of 1,700 scientists.

What brought him to the creationist point of view? “The creation world view makes sense,” he explains. “While there are scientists on both sides of the issue who have questions they can’t answer, for me and thousands of other scientists, research favors young-earth creationism.”

Dr. DeYoung, author or co-author of 15 books dealing with creation science, first started exploring the creationist viewpoint as a Ph.D. student at Iowa State University. “It was at a time when the Christian faith kind of opened up for me,” he recalls. While a doctoral student at Iowa State, he met a local pastor who explained Christian ideas to him, which he had not understood before then. He also met Dr. John Whitcomb from Grace Theological Seminary, a leading theologian and creationist. He and Dr. Whitcomb have co-authored a number of books.

Dr. DeYoung’s newest project is another book, his 16th, entitled Discovery of Design, scheduled for publication this fall.

Grace Seminary Grad, College President Balyo Dies

Posted by Terry White on April 22, 2009  |  No Comments

John Balyo, former head of Corban College, dies at 89

John Balyo, a former president of Corban College, died Saturday afternoon at a care center in Salem, Oregon. He was with his wife, Betty, and son Mike.

Balyo, 89, served as the college’s president from 1983 to 1991, according to the school’s Web site. He and Betty were both active in college life, and Baylo served as chancellor and then president emeritus until his death.

Before coming to what was then called Western Baptist College, Balyo studied law. He graduated from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Ind.

He was pastor of two churches in Indiana and one in Ohio before he began teaching at two sister-schools of Western Baptist College.

A memorial service for Balyo will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Salem.

Balyo Obituary:

John G. Balyo, 89, departed to be with his Lord on Saturday, April 18, 2009. He was born on January 18, 1920 in Greenville, S.C., the son of John and Etta (Groce) Balyo. He grew up in Greenville and, as a young boy, sang in the Rotary Boy Choristers, a well-known group of 50 voices, who charmed their audiences in their white trousers and blue coats. John often said the music they sang gave him an appreciation for Christian anthems and classical music.

In high school, he was on debating teams, which was good training for a dream of attending law school. John graduated from Atlanta Law School in 1940. At that point in life, he answered the call to the Christian ministry, and went north to get his education at Valparaiso University, Goshen College, and Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana, where he received his MDiv degree.

After seminary, he met Betty Lindstrand, and they were married in 1945. They served a small church in Elkhart, Indiana, and later a growing church in Kokomo, Indiana. In 1953, John became the minister of Cedar Hill Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, where they remained for 19 years. During his time in Cleveland, he began an extensive Bible conference and radio ministry, in addition to pastoral duties for a congregation of about 800.

In 1972, John was invited to join the faculty of Grand Rapids Baptist College, now Cornerstone University. For a short period, he served as pastor of Suncoast Baptist Church in New Port Richey, Florida, until he was invited to join the faculty at Baptist Bible College & School of Theology in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania.

In 1983, instead of retiring, John accepted the challenge to come west as the fifth president of Western Baptist College, now Corban College. This union lasted for 25 years, as John became Chancellor in 1991 and President emeritus in 2004. He was recently honored to have the newest resident hall on campus named “John G. Balyo Hall.”

John served for many years on the Board of Baptist Mid-Missions in Cleveland, Ohio. He possessed a life-long interest in missions and he traveled to mission fields in Africa, Europe, South America, and Korea. In addition, he conducted five tours to Israel, Egypt, and Turkey. Finally, John was an avid Cleveland Browns football fan and a supporter of the Peanuts comic strip, using many true-to-life quotes in sermon illustrations.

John was known for his articulate speaking style and for compassion toward young men preparing for the ministry. He loved working with the younger generation, which kept him going.

John is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Michael; grandsons, John, of Grand Rapids, Mich. and James, of Flint, Mich.; a brother, Clyde (wife, Elsie) of Miamisburg, Ohio; sister-in-law, Kate of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. A son, James, preceded him in death, as well as sisters, Lucille and Claire, and a brother, William.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 25 at First Baptist Church, 395 Marion St. NE, Salem. In lieu of flowers, a Balyo Scholarship Fund has been established at Corban College, 5000 Deer Park Dr., Salem, OR 97317-9392. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
