Former Wheaton College president Hudson Taylor Armerding dies

By Robert Sanchez

Hudson Taylor Armerding, who led Wheaton College during years of social unrest and the Vietnam War, died on Tuesday. He was 91.

The Carol Stream resident served as Wheaton College’s fifth president from 1965 to 1982. On Wednesday, the school’s current leader remembered Armerding as “a great inspiration.”

“Hudson was not only a scholar, teacher, and college president; he was also a pastor who shared biblical truths from his heart,” Wheaton College President Duane Litfin said in a statement. “He wrote countless sermons, addresses and articles during the course of his life. He served the Lord so faithfully and so long, and challenged Wheaton students to understand a Christian’s death is walking into the sunrise.”

Argentines Make Clothing for Filipinos

Posted by Terry White on December 2, 2009  |  No Comments

Here is a short excerpt from an e-mail by Gary McCaman, who works with GBIM in Argentina:

When the churches of Macedonia heard of the famine crisis in Judea, even in their “severe ordeal of suffering, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in the wealth of their generosity” begging to be permitted to help (2 Cor 8:1-4).

In like manner, when the church in Berazategui heard of the crisis in the Philippines, they wanted to help. So, the new sewing ministry is making shorts and shirts for the crisis-stricken children of the Philippines. Praise God for their compassion and sacrifice.

Newest Grace Brethren Chaplain Called to Active Duty

Posted by Terry White on December 2, 2009  |  1 Comment

“All of my life I have felt the desire to serve hurting and less fortunate people. I believe God has called me to this task so that I may be His hands in war, His expression of kindness, and His desire to seek out those who are lost and cannot find their way.”

This is how Dr. Richard Hurst expresses his passion to serve the men and women in the U.S. Army. “Jesus measured greatness in terms of service, not status,” Richard adds. “Being a full-time missionary in uniform, ready to serve all walks of life as a U.S. Army Chaplain, nothing matters more and nothing will last as long for His kingdom.”

Richard and his wife, Star (pictured), received news of his call to active duty November 18 and will report to Chaplain School at Fort Jackson, SC on January 10. Richard and Star are members of the Sebring, Florida, Grace Brethren Church, where they were introduced to the FGBC by Pastor Randy Smith.

John Schumacher, FGBC Chaplains Endorsing Agent, assisted with Richard’s application for active duty. “God certainly linked us together,” Richard comments about his relationship with Col. Schumacher. “He is more like a father to me than an Endorsing Agent.”

Chaplain Hurst envisions his future service for God and Country: “I want to always be the one who encourages, to bring a smile on a sad face, to ignite the spirit inside. I want to be the kind of Chaplain that no matter what the soldier is facing in life they will know that Chaplain Hurst has an “always on call” policy, earning their respect as a side-by-side soldier and as a friend.”

Dr. Larry Chamberlain, coordinator for the Eagle Commission, encourages, “Pray for Richard and Star as they embark on this exciting venture at the front-lines of the Great Commission!”

Waterloo Church Helps Sponsor Tksgiving Dinner

Posted by Terry White on December 1, 2009  |  No Comments

From the Waterloo/Cedar Falls (Iowa) Courier:

Dinner offers students a lesson in charity

By JOHN MOLSEED

WATERLOO – Amber Dietz inherited a decade-old tradition when she stepped in to her first year as principal of Lowell Elementary School.

The school is the site of an annual Thanksgiving dinner along with First Wesleyan and Grace Brethren churches.

Volunteers from the churches and school served the traditional holiday fare of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pies at the school Saturday.

More than 600 people in the neighborhood and throughout the community enjoyed the annual meal last year and the year before.

“The food is really good and you get to sit and talk to people you haven’t seen in a while,” said Nancy Hemenway. Her daughter, Amber Hemenway, who also enjoyed a meal Saturday, attended Lowell Elementary School from first through fifth grades.

For some, the annual dinner is about nostalgia as much as food. Grace Bohle, who attended the school 65 years ago, said the school is still familiar decades later.

“A lot of memories here, all pretty good ones,” she said.

Students created turkey day-themed place mats and spent more than a month collecting canned goods to give to those enjoying the neighborhood meal. Food drives at schools are common, but not every class gets to see first hand the results of their efforts.

“It’s good for kids to be able to follow the cycle and see who gets the food,” Dietz said.

Students gathered the donated food along with food donated by Grainger Parts in Waterloo, First Wesleyan and Grace Brethren and filled 270 grocery bags for people to take with them after the meal.

“It’s a good way to learn about citizenship and give back to the community,” said Cindy Leininger, chairwoman of the student council at Lowell.

Each year more people attend the event and more volunteers sign up to help, said Beth Hottle, a volunteer with Grace Brethren Church.

“Every year, we think we’ve lost people, but every year the sign-up sheets are full,” she said.

Friday Feature: Book Explores God’s Relationship With Man Through Worship

Posted by admin on November 24, 2009  |  No Comments

Now on sale through Friday, November 27!

Worship: The Golden Thread is a masterful exposition of scriptural teaching on worship along with examples from real-life, including Bruce Triplehorn’s work in Brazil and his use of marriage as a metaphor.

“The Scriptures are a history of God’s relationship with man through worship,” Triplehorn says. “Worship is the underlying theme of every page and the glue that ties its long history together.” It is the key, he stresses, that unlocks both the meaning of the Bible and also the foundation of God’s redemptive plan.

For use as a small group or study text, the book contains “Where to Start” suggestions and questions after each chapter. After discussing misconceptions about worship, Triplehorn reveals in successive chapters worship in truth, worship as a choice, and the transforming power of worship. The second part of the book focuses on the place of worship in the areas of evangelism, discipleship, and leadership in the church

Alta Loma Participates in Darwin Outreach

Posted by Terry White on November 24, 2009  |  No Comments

Pastor Roy Halberg of the Alta Loma Grace Fellowship in California (pictured with books) participated in a program in which 170,000 students got a copy of Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species.”

Copies of a special edition of Darwin’s book were given away at 100 of America’s top universities. The book was freely given in honor of its 150th anniversary, and contains a 50-page introduction by best-selling author Ray Comfort. According to Halberg, more than 1200 people across the country will be handing the landmark publication to our future doctors, lawyers and politicians, and atheists are fuming.

In a message to his church, Halberg said, “You were represented by Carlos and me as we joined the team at CSUN (Cal State University Northridge). We had a great day and gave out 2,000 copies to mostly thankful people . . . please pray that they read the 50 page introduction and respond to the gospel message.

“Ray Comfort, the author of the controversial introduction, says that students should read the whole book. ‘Darwin says: ‘A fair result can be obtained only by fully stating and balancing the facts and arguments on both sides of each question,” says Ray Comfort. (Introduction to On the Origins of Species, 1859). Yet atheists have vowed to burn the book, offer ‘unilateral resistance,’ and Richard Dawkins has even encouraged students to rip out the Introduction.”

Halberg reports, “Our opposition at CSUN was limited to one campus policeman who asked Carlos to move elsewhere. God truly answered prayer for a great day in every way.”

Jim Knepper, York GBC, With the Lord

Posted by Terry White on November 15, 2009  |  1 Comment

Pastor Dan White of the York, Pennsylvania, Grace Brethren Church, sent the following e-mail to his congregation regarding the homegoing of one of the founders of the York church:

This morning at 12:32 am, Brother Jim Knepper entered the presence of the Savior he so loved. He was one of six brothers in a family that was instrumental in the beginning of the York GBC back in the early 1950’s.

Jim had been a member here until several years ago when he and his wife, Edna, moved back to their home area (Somerset County, PA) and lived there.

They had been back from time to time to visit, most recently returning last Saturday for the 90th birthday party of one of our dear ladies. After Sunday am church, they were to leave for home when Jim’s condition required medical attention. He was taken to Memorial Hospital here in York. It was from that hospital that he “walked the valley of the shadow”—with our Lord.

I suppose it doesn’t get any better than this: to worship with us at York GBC one Sunday, and then to be in the myriads of worshipers in heaven the next!

Thx for your prayers for us here and for Edna, his widow, and Joyce and Pastor Larry Humberd (his daughter and her husband) and their family.

Heaven has become richer with his presence.

“Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.”

Dan

PS I have copied Pastor Larry and Pastor Tim Hodge (grandson-in-law) in this e-mail so you may extend any condolences or questions to them. Details of service, etc., are not available at this time.

Also, should you wish to correspond with Edna, you may use the following address: Mrs Edna Knepper, 404 South St., Berlin, PA, 15530

Pastor Dan White, Grace Brethren Church, 661 N Newberry St, York, PA, 17404, 717-843-7284, pastordanw@verizon.net

Monday morning update from Larry Humberd:

I thought i would piggy back on Pastor Dan’s email and just let you know that the schedule will be as follows:

Viewing- Tuesday 5-6:30pm @ York GBC
Service- Tuesday 6:30pm, light reception after the service (@ York GBC)
Burial- Wednesday 9am (For family and any who wish to attend)

Thanks for your prayers. Joyce & Edna are experiencing God’s grace & peace, as are the rest of the family. And we rejoice with hope & confidence for “Poppi’s” graduation to heaven. Can’t wait to see him again soon.

Friday Feature: Book Looks at the Practice of Ordinances

Posted by Liz Cutler Gates on November 13, 2009  |  No Comments

Now available through Friday, November 20 at a discounted rate!

Ordinances: What Are They?

What is the difference between an ordinance and a sacrament? In the minds of average Christians, they seem to be clear and well-defined. But when pressed to actually define the terms, it is not a task that is easily undertaken. In fact, the Church has seen a tremendous amount of diversity as to what an ordinance really is. From the early post-apostolic era, in which little attention or definition was offered, to the height of Scholasticism in the Middle Ages, when a list of 30 sacraments was presented, theologians have discussed and debated this subject.

Ordinances: What Are They? is written by Grace Brethren pastor David Plaster and explores the possible parameters which Biblical data and theological deduction place on the term “ordinance.” He provides an overview of the term and its history, reviews its ceremonial aspects, highlights any intended significance, and discusses what constitutes an expectation of perpetuation regarding ordnances.

Ordinances: What Are They? is now available at bmhbooks.com for just $6 (regularly priced at $7.99). Or call 1-800-348-2756 and ask for the Friday Feature. Tell John that you saw it on the Editor’s Blog! Order now!

This price is only good through Friday, November 20, 2009.

Earthquake Jolts Dillsburg Church

Posted by Terry White on November 13, 2009  |  No Comments

This is an excerpt from a story in today’s local paper from Dillsburg, Pa., where George Traub is pastor of the Hope Grace Brethren Church. To read the entire article, click here.

Quaking Dillsburg seeks answers

by Greg Gross

At first, Rebekah Wyman thought the rumbles were caused by the boys who were in the other part of a partitioned-off part of the room.

But upon further investigation during a bible study session in October 2008, Wyman, and the other girls who had attended the study at Hope Grace Brethren Church in Carroll Township, found out that it was actually a small earthquake that had rocked the building.

“We thought it was the guys and they thought it was us,” the Northern York High School senior said as she recalled the first time she felt an earthquake.

Since October 3, 2008, the township, just southeast of the York County Borough of Dillsburg, has been hit with a swarm of small earthquakes, said Jeri Jones of Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove.

A number of the quakes’ epicenters have been just down the street from the church at the intersection of Old York and Warrington roads.

Ironically, Wyman said, the church’s youth group is called “Epicenter,” Wyman said with a laugh as she enjoyed coffee with her mother, Kimberly Wyman, also of Carroll Township, at Coffee Express in Dillsburg. The younger girl said the tremors aren’t felt at their home, which is to the west of Route 15.
