Los Altos’ Teacher’s Son Rescued From Haiti Rubble

Posted by Terry White on January 15, 2010  |  1 Comment

Mike Jentes of the Los Altos Grace Brethren Church in California sends along the following good news and dramatic video:

We asked you to please pray for Dan Woolley, our sixth grade teacher Pat Woolley’s son.  He is with Compassion International and was in Port Au Prince Haiti when the earthquake hit.  The family (wife and two small sons) had not heard from him yet.

Thank you for your prayers! I received this message from Karen Salas this morning and wanted to pass it on to you:

“They found Dan alive.  He is trapped in an elevator and they are working to get him out- from State Dept. information.  Praise the Lord!”

Today Jentes reports, “Praise the Lord. There is video confirmation of Dan Woolley being pulled out of the Hotel Montana alive.  I spoke with Pat (our 6th Grade teacher) earlier and Dan’s wife, Christy, will be flying to Miami to meet him when he gets back to the USA.  You can see a chronicle of reports about from the Compassion International staff at this link

Here is dramatic video of Dan being rescued from the rubble of the hotel:

Friday Afternoon Update on Haiti, Elysee Joseph

Posted by Terry White on January 15, 2010  |  No Comments

This update from Dr. Chuck Davis of Caribbean Vision Ministries was received late Friday:

This is a note of good news and bad news. The bad news is that Yolette’s niece died in the quake in Port Au Prince. We were with her parents last week in Cap Haitian. Our hearts and prayers are with them.

Pastor Herlin’s brother, Watson, and Herlin’s sister & baby have been found and are safe. The damage from the quake in Cap Haitian to structures and people is very minor. For that we praise God.

Communication is improving for some people. T-mobile is providing free calls to Haiti until January 31. But we still have no communication with Pastor Eddy in Port Au Prince. As soon as we can establish communication we will determine how best to help him and his congregation

Pastor Elysee Joseph will be leaving Haiti as soon as we can arrange passage.
Pray for him as he is exhausted. He has been in Haiti since the middle of December. Pastor Joseph went to Port Au Prince to claim the body of Yvonne’s sister but discovered that she had been buried in the mass grave of 7,000 people. The sights he saw has made an everlasting impression on him.

Thanks to all who have responded by financial gifts to help the people of Haiti. And thanks to those who have offered to serve on ministry teams during this time. Please continue to pray for the Haitian people. And pray that many will come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord during this time. That is the only thing that will truly change Haiti.

Thursday Update on Grace Brethren in Haiti

Posted by Terry White on January 14, 2010  |  No Comments

Dr. Chuck Davis of Caribbean Vision Ministries sent out this update on Grace Brethren interests in Haiti at about noon on Thursday.

Pastor Elysee Joseph’s sister had communication with him and he is doing fine. Pastor Eddy Bazin, one of our ministry partners in Port Au Prince, survived the quake in good shape as well as his family and the ministry facilities.

But we have sad news and some prayer requests for you. Our teams are acquainted with Yvonne (Volvo) one of our valuable staff members in Cap Haitian.
We have received word that Yvonne’s little sister who was in Port Au Prince has died during the quake. She was with our team just last week.

Our medical team who served in Cap Haitien last summer will remember Pastor Herlin’s brother the doctor. The doctor has been missing since the quake. Also, Herlin’s sister who gave birth to a child this month is also missing.

And Yollette, Pastor Elysee’s wife, has a niece who was attending college in Port Au Prince, and she also is missing.

Evidently, some phone communication has been established in Port Au Prince so people are beginning to communicate with their relatives. That is not true of Cap Haitien where the phone lines are still out and now email appears to be spotty as well.

Please pray for the people and their families mentioned above. Pray for all the people of Haiti and the military people, Red Cross and first responders attempting to get to and minister in Haiti. This is going to be a long drawn out mission to help the people of Haiti. The first phase is going to be tragic for everyone involved and only by God’s grace will the people of Haiti receive the help they need. Please pray diligently for them.

Please pray for Pastor Elysee Joseph and the rest of our team in Haiti at this time. I know Elysee well and I am sure he is “up to his eyeballs” in ministry to people. All parts of Haiti will need help and outside of Port Au Prince most of the world has no idea of the human suffering in Haiti at this time.

If you would like to help Haitian people now and in the days to come you may send a financial gift to: Caribbean Vision Ministries(mark it Haiti relief fund) and send it to Caribbean Vision Ministries, PO Box 18317, Panama City Beach, FL 32417. All funds received will be used 100% for this purpose.

Social Concerns Chair Promotes Religious Liberty

Posted by Terry White on January 14, 2010  |  1 Comment

As Christian citizens of America, we cherish our religious liberty.  In light of this, I have brought before the Long Beach City Council each year for the past three years a “Religious Freedom Proclamation.”  The council acted on this proposal favorably this past Monday evening.

Once again, I am sending you a generic document and I encourage you to work on this issue locally, now or in the future.  You will find it below.  This year it is my goal to contact the Long Beach school system’s Board of Education on how religious liberty should be presented in the public schools.

 Let freedom ring!

 Donald Shoemaker, pastor

Grace Brethren Church, Seal Beach, Calif.

Chairman, FGBC Social Concerns Committee

Religious Freedom Day Proclamation

WHEREAS our nation’s founders recognized the importance of religious freedom and secured this liberty in the words of the First Amendment, declaring that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;” and

WHEREAS the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, our country’s first legal safeguard for religious liberty, was adopted on January 16, 1786; and

WHEREAS on January 16 of each year since 1994 the President of the United States has issued a Proclamation on the importance of religious liberty, which in 1994 recognized “our government did not create this liberty, but it cannot be too vigilant in securing its blessings;” and

WHEREAS the free exercise of religion has undergirded the social efforts of many Americans, notably Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birthday on January 15 we commemorate each year; and

WHEREAS the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 18) declares, “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion” including the right “to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance;” and

WHEREAS religious freedom now faces challenges, persecution and coercion, violent and non-violent, both at home and around the world; and

 WHEREAS our country has embraced a tradition of religious liberty that has prevented religious domination, conflict and persecution and nurtured an environment where religion has flourished and where people have been left free to choose which faith they shall follow or none at all;

NOW, THEREFORE the ____________ [name of local governing body; e.g., “City Council”] of _____________ [city/state] hereby declares January 16, 2010 as “Religious Freedom Day” in our community.

We encourage city government, community groups, schools and places of worship to reaffirm their devotion to the principles of religious freedom and educate and reflect on the importance of religious liberty so it may continue secure as part of our nation’s fabric.

We encourage citizens and government to be mindful of the principles of religious liberty in their decisions, attitudes and actions.

On this day let us give thanks for this precious right that has so profoundly shaped and sustained our Nation, and let us strengthen our efforts to share its blessings with oppressed peoples everywhere.

Lititz Men Safe in Haiti

Posted by Terry White on January 14, 2010  |  No Comments

Pastor Scott Distler of the Grace Brethren church in Lititz, Pennsylvania, posted the following on his blog Thursday morning:
As you know, the country of Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake on Tuesday.  What you may not know is that four young men from Grace Church are currently serving in Haiti.  They are Trevor Sell, Ty Getz, Mark Rissinger and Ben Wingert.  I received this update from Sheri Sell (Trevor’s mom):

“Nothing was sweeter than getting the text from him (Trevor) saying ‘we are all OK’.  The mission(Feed My Sheep) is in the remote city of Montrouis which is about 60 mi. north of Port au Prince. The earthquake hit 10 miles west of port au prince which is the capitol city which has the only airport to fly in and out of. Our concern is now will they be able to get to Port au Prince via the 2 hr. dirt road drive that leads from the mission. Some of the mountainous roads have collapsed and because the land is stripped of trees, mudslides and rubble, blocking roads will be a concern in remote areas.  Pray specifically that the boys can get into the city, through the city, and somehow the airports will allow flights out by Saturday. This is when they are scheduled to fly home. I know that God is in control and is watching over Trevor, Ty, Ben, and Mark. Keep Praying!”

Haiti Update

Posted by Terry White on January 13, 2010  |  No Comments

The following update was received early Wednesday afternoon from Dr. Chuck Davis and from Pastor Elysee Joseph in Haiti. Relief Agency Brethren is sending immediate aid, and those wishing to contribute to the RAB relief fund may do so through the Grace Brethren International Missions website by clicking here.

I know you have heard by now of the disaster in Haiti. Our GO2Haiti Team returned from ministry in Cap Haitian on Sunday. Pastor Elysee Joseph remained in Cap Haitien and was to fly to Port Au Prince on Tuesday and spend the night and fly home on Thursday. His flight was canceled from Cap Haitien so he missed the quake in Port Au Prince. I received this email from Pastor Elysee at 10:25am CST this morning.

“Hi Chuck! I am trapped here in Cap Haitien. All flights are canceled. There is no ground transportation and no communication by phone. All networks are down. I am OK. Thanks to the vigilence of our leadership our Institute Director Pastor Joses was spared a disaster. We were able to move his family to the Institute before a big part of the house went down. I am using money in our ministry fund to take care of those kind of emergencies. I will keep you posted.”

Your prayers will be appreciated for our friends in Haiti and Pastor Elysee as he evaluates things and lets us know how we may help. Any financial gifts to help with the disaster can be sent to Caribbean Vision Ministries, PO Box 18317, Panama City Beach, FL 32417 and marked “Haiti Disaster Relief.” Thanks for your prayers and assistance.

First Reports on Haiti Quake Damage

Posted by Terry White on January 13, 2010  |  No Comments

Dr. Chuck Davis, Executive Director of Caribbean Vision Ministries and a longtime leader of the Grace Brethren ministries in Haiti has responded to requests for information:

Our GO2Haiti Team returned from Haiti on Sunday. Pastor Elysee Joseph remained in the country. The preliminary report from Elysee Joseph is that he is OK and that Cap Haitian appears to have escaped major damage from the quake but Port Au Prince has suffered major damage.

We have had no communication with anyone in Port Au Prince. Elysee was scheduled to be there yesterday but his flight from CAP was canceled prior to the quake. I will keep you informed as I gather news. Have your folks praying for Haiti.

Davis said, “I don’t have any [information] at this time except for the news channels and on the web. We had email with Elysee Joseph yesterday but have nothing today. He is in the Cap Haitien area which suffered little damage. We have a ministry friend (Haitian) who has a large ministry in Port Au Prince where our team stayed last Saturday night. We have no contact with him at this time.”

An announcement from Relief Agency Brethren about how to help quake victims is expected later today and will be posted when available.

Meyersdale Church to Host Game Supper

Posted by Terry White on January 11, 2010  |  No Comments

From the Somerset Co. (PA) Daily American:

Fisheries biologist to be Game Supper speaker
MEYERSDALE – A lifelong participant in the outdoors, Kevin Yokum will be the featured speaker at the annual Game Supper to be held on Jan. 16 at the Meyersdale Grace Brethren Church, 112 Beachley Street. The event will be held in the church’s Activities’ Building, located at the rear of the main church facility.

Yokum, a resident of Ellamore, W.Va., is a fisheries biologist for the West Virginia DNR and a freelance outdoor writer, combining his life’s passion into a two-fold career. He began hunting and fishing in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains with his parents and grandparents. The sportsman tradition was simply a way of life in the Yokum family, and early on he knew a career involving the outdoors was imminent.

The supper is open to the public and is free, although a free will offering will be taken to help defray expenses. Reservations are required and the deadline is Jan. 13. They can be made by calling the church at 634-5980. The menu will include a wide variety of donated wild game and fish in addition to other meats. Several door prizes will be awarded.

A pretty good athlete in his younger days, Kevin played baseball at Davis and Elkins College and went on to graduate with a double major in environmental science and biology. He continued his education, and received an M.S. in biology from Marshall University, and started working as a researcher for the U.S. Forest Service and as a college instructor at Davis and Elkins College. In less than a year he landed his dream job as a fisheries biologist with the West Virginia DNR and was quickly promoted to district fisheries biologist.

One of six district biologists in the state, Kevin works with many different species of freshwater sportfish, managing their populations to offer better fishing opportunities for anglers. On any given day Kevin may be stocking fish from a helicopter, tagging a 50-inch musky, electrofishing a wild mountain brook trout stream or explaining a wildlife regulation to legislators at the state capital.

Kevin’s second career as an outdoor writer began to emerge when he began writing articles explaining the scientific rational behind hunting and angling issues. Now days he has become a popular outdoor writer who regular publishes articles in In-Fisherman, Bassmaster, Sport Fishing and Black Powder Guns and Hunting. His works can also be found in more that 20 other state and national publications. On occasion he contributes seasonal outdoor columns to Morgantown’s Dominion Post and the Elkins Inter-Mountain newspapers.

Kevin has had opportunities to work with the staff of BASS and ESPN, and is regularly featured on the radio show West Virginia Outdoors. He has made various appearances on the Outdoor Channel and recently filmed a series of full-length TV fishing shots for West Virginia television stations.

Realizing that a bit of divine intervention must be involved in the extraordinary writing opportunities he was afforded, Kevin felt called to write a book for hunters and anglers which would bridge the gap between the passion that true sportsmen feel in the outdoors and the love of the Lord Jesus. His first book, ‘Heart Shot’ is an inspiring devotional serving to help sportsmen overcome life’s challenges through hunting and fishing adventures.

Since ‘Heart Shot” was released in August 2004, Kevin has conducted numerous speaking engagements at church functions, sportsmen’s clubs and banquets throughout the country. As time permits, Kevin continues to travel the world pursuing hunting and fishing adventures. Destinations have included Costa Rica, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, Mexico and U.S. destinations such as the Florida Keys, the Everglades and Yellowstone.

Kevin, his wife, Amy and their children are active members of Landmark Baptist Church in Elkins, W.Va. There they work with many ministries in the church including a teen ministry, ages 2-3 and a young adult Sunday School group.

Kevin exclaims, “God has blessed me in so many ways, I consider it a real privilege to speak to folks about outdoor adventures, and the extraordinary opportunity the Lord has presented to each of us with His sacrifice on the cross.”

Grace Brethren Pastor Randy Haulk emphasizes that the Game Supper is open to the public, but it is important that reservations be made by the Jan. 13 deadline.

Ashland Southview’s Wifflefest Makes Its Mark

Posted by Terry White on January 2, 2010  |  No Comments

The local newspaper in Ashland, Ohio, has chosen the annual Wifflefest event sponsored by Southview Grace Brethren Church (Mark Abel, pastor) as one of the five outstanding sports stories of the year in their area.

Wifflefest X scores a 10
T-G Staff Report
Ten years, six tournaments, 117 teams and more than 500 people.
It wasn’t your usual backyard wiffleball game.
Wifflefest, an annual tradition at Southview Grace Brethren Church, soared to heights previously unexplored with its decade installation last Fourth of July weekend.

The brainchild of Southview senior pastor Mark Abel and co-coordinator Zac Hess, Wifflefest X broke the 100-team barrier for the first time ever in 2009 after its largest contingent to date in 2008 at 95 teams.

Played on nine wiffleball fields replicated after Major League and college baseball stadiums, and in conjunction with BalloonFest, the event featured tournaments in elementary, junior high, high school, adult, family fun and family competitive divisions.

“I think this year we can safely say that 99 percent of the people that played had a great time,” Abel said. “People look like they’re having a good time. You hear them laughing, especially with those little kids, so you’re going to assume that they’re going to want to come back.”

Mark Cahill, a former Auburn University basketball player and author of two books, was the keynote speaker.

One wiffleball player, 21-year-old Ashland High School graduate Aaron Hawks, flew halfway around the world from Africa a week and a half early so he could make it in time for Wifflefest X.
