Stolen Car from Baltimore Wrecked in Police Chase

Posted by Terry White on December 17, 2010  |  No Comments

Pastor Dan Thornton of the Maranatha Brethren Church in Hagerstown, Maryland, was part of this ongoing drama this week as reported in the RecordHerald.com.

Hagerstown, Md. —Three bags of trash left in a church parking lot led to a high-speed police chase, a crash and the arrest of a suspected car thief Wednesday morning.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s office, the bags of trash were found in the parking lot of Maranatha Brethren Church on Scott Hill Road. The pastor said someone dumped the trash between 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday. An envelope with Kenneth Hollobaugh’s name and address was inside. Hollobaugh told the deputy his silver 2001 Honda Accord had been stolen from outside his Baltimore home, information that was confirmed by the Essex Police Department.

Shortly after leaving the church, the deputy spotted a silver Accord pulling out of Indian Lane. He attempted to pull the car over on Cheryl Drive, but the vehicle continued onto Scott Hill Drive and onto Jefferson Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The deputy caught up with the car at Margaret Drive. The driver tried to pass a slower vehicle on the berm, but did not realize a culvert was there.

The driver lost control of the car near Indian Lane. It hit a tree head-on and rolled over. The driver, a teen male, crawled from the vehicle with a large gash on his forehead. He was taken to Meritus Medical Center and was listed in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.

The vehicle was destroyed and knocked down two trees.

The teen faces charges of motor vehicle theft, theft of property between $1,000 and $10,000, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, negligent driving, speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign.

John Kline Homestead Purchase Nearer to Reality

Newsline: John Kline Homestead closes in on goal to purchase property

(Dec. 16, 2010) Elgin, IL — There is “exciting news” coming from the John Kline Homestead preservation project, according to leader Paul Roth. The project is within $5,000 of raising the $425,000 needed to purchase the historic Kline family property by the end of this year.

A John Kline Homestead Preservation Trust was created in 2006 in hopes of preserving and eventually being able to purchase the home of Elder John Kline, a leader of the Brethren during the Civil War and a martyr for peace. The homestead is in Broadway, Va., near Linville Creek Church of the Brethren where Roth is pastor.

The date for closing on the property has not yet been set by Park View Federal Credit Union of Harrisonburg, Va., Roth said. The homestead Board of Directors will plan a celebration event after the property has been purchased.

This fall the homestead has hosted a number of events both to encourage the raising of funds and to highlight the peacemaking witness of Elder John Kline as a key anniversary of the Civil War approaches in 2011.

“We just completed our third Candlelight Dinner in the John Kline house with 88 guests enjoying a traditional homemade meal and the conversations of people who lived in the house sharing their concerns about the rumors of war in the fall of 1860,” Roth reported. Actors played the parts of people who would have lived and worked in the house at that time. An actor playing John Kline “read from his Jan. 1, 1861, diary entry, fearing the impact of secession and war upon his family and congregation,” Roth said.

More Candlelight Dinners will be offered in 2011. Tentative dates are Jan. 21 and 22, Feb. 18 and 19, March 18 and 19, and April 15 and 16. Tickets are $40 per plate. Seating is limited to 32. Reservations will be received beginning Jan. 3. For more information contact Paul Roth at 540-896-5001 or  proth@eagles.bridgewater.edu.

Posted by Terry White on December 16, 2010  |  1 Comment

At Christmas time each year, the SMM (Serving My Master) group sponsored by the Winona Lake (IN) Grace Brethren Church (Bruce Barlow, lead paster) holds a Mother/Daughter Tea. This year’s tea was this Thursday afternoon, December 16, and about 120 mothers and daughters were in attendance.

The SMM group meets at Jefferson Elementary School, located across the street from the church building, Thursdays at 3:45 p.m. after school.  Approximately 80 girls in grades 1-6 are involved this year, with more than a dozen mothers, ladies from the church, and Grace College students as helpers and directors of the program. Sharon White is the director of the program this year, working under the director of children’s ministries, Becky Wilson.

At Thursday’s tea, the program began with refreshments.  The girls presented some program elements for their mothers, and Nancy Peugh spoke about Christmas traditions in Germany, where she served as a missionary for 20 years. The other “big event” of the SMM year is a father-daughter picnic in the park, held in the spring.

ABC News to Feature ICDI Work Friday

Posted by Terry White on December 14, 2010  |  1 Comment

The work of founder Jim Hocking and Integrated Community Development International (ICDI), a cooperating ministry with the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches, will be featured in an ABC news special scheduled to air this Friday, December 17, at 10 p.m. eastern.

As a result of the publicity surrounding the Charity:Water Born in September campaign to raise awareness and funding for the water crisis in the Central African Republic (CAR), ABC News opted to pick up the story and develop it further.

One of the producers for the ABC News program 20/20, Miguel Sancho, was struck by what he saw in the Charity:Water campaign communications and videos. ABC News had just initiated a programming project in concert with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation titled “The Global Health Crisis.” This feature would highlight crisis situations from around the world and how governments, non-profit charities and non-governmental organizations like ICDI are working to “be the change” and save lives.

The first program in this year-long ABC news special will air this Friday, December 17, at 10 p.m. during the regularly scheduled program slot for 20/20. The work of ICDI founder Jim Hocking and his team of Central Africans will be prominently featured as a segment in the hour-long program.

You can read more details about this upcoming ABC News special event here.  See interviews from the field with Jim Hocking, lead driller Marcellin Namsene, and watch the ICDI drilling team and the rig “Faithful & True” in action.  Witness the tremendous impact that ICDI and its supporters are having in central Africa, this most desperate place in the world.

‘We Care Warsaw’ Ministers to 750+ Neighbors

Posted by Terry White on December 13, 2010  |  No Comments

More than 750 neighbors and friends—many of whom have no attachment to church—participated in the “We Care Warsaw” outreach staged this past Saturday, December 11, by the Winona Lake (IN) Grace Brethren Church (Bruce Barlow, lead pastor).

Dave Rank of the pastoral staff spearheaded and directed the project, which now has been going for several years.  Utilizing several facilities, including the Winona Lake church’s building, the Gordon Recreation Center of Grace College, and the college’s maintenance garage, “We Care” serviced hundreds with free haircuts, manicures, family photos, free oil changes, a hearty meal, and much more.

Approximately 450 meals, prepared and served by church members, were served to the community during the afternoon event. Dozens of church volunteers assisted with the project, and each was prepared to start spiritual conversations with questions such as, “Can I ask you an interesting question? Christmas is celebrating Jesus’ birthday, right? Why do you think Jesus came?”

Church volunteers were also equipped with the small booklet “One Second After You…”, a condensed version of Mark Cahill’s book “One Heartbeat Away.”  Prayer volunteers were available throughout the day to pray with those who requested it, and at least one individual made a commitment to Christ during the event.

Times-Union Sports Editor

WINONA LAKE – For a week in March of 2012, the orthopedical capital of the world will become the basketball capital of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Beginning in 2012, Grace College’s Orthopaedic Capital Center will be the site of both the men’s and women’s NCCAA Divsion I national tournaments, and 16 teams – eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams – will converge on the communities of Warsaw and Winona Lake.

“This is a great day for our athletic department, campus and community,” said Grace College Athletic Director Chad Briscoe. “We are humbled and thankful to be selected by the NCCAA for the opportunity to host both of these national championships starting in 2012. We will work diligently to create a national championship atmosphere that generates great memories for the participants, fans and our community.”

Grace College will host the NCCAA women’s national tournament for the third consecutive year this season, and will then host both the men’s and women’s tournaments in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

“Indiana and basketball just go together, so this is especially nice for us,” said Grace College President Dr. Ron Manahan. “We have a great venue for the tournaments, as well as a great community. Not only are we hosting the tournaments, but this is something that will make an economic impact on the community.”

VisionOhio Explores Church Planting in Ohio African-American Communities

Posted by Liz Cutler Gates on December 9, 2010  |  No Comments

Ray Miller, second from right, shares about his ministry in Toledo, Ohio. To his right is his wife, Betty. Also pictured are Tony Webb, left, executive director of VisionOhio, and Cheri Boehm, staff member with VisionOhio.

Six couples who are willing to be involved in seeking God for new Grace Brethren churches in African-American communities in Ohio recently met to determine how to proceed.

The group gathered November 20, 2010, in Dublin, Ohio, and spent time learning about each other’s ministries. The session is a result of the 2020 Future Story of VisionOhio, the regional Grace Brethren church planting ministry, which calls for a network of black congregations among the Ohio Grace Brethren churches.

“We are using a tried and true approach for movement development,” says Tony Webb, executive director of VisionOhio. “We call it vision/fraternity/prayer. The most needed piece is prayer; the most fragile piece is fraternity and the vision piece comes as we do the previous two well.”

Stephen Joyce

Stephen Joyce is leading the effort to plant Grace Brethren churches in African-American communities in Ohio.

Participating in the November 20, 2010, meeting in Dublin, Ohio, were Stephen and Rosie Joyce, from About My Father’s House, Washington, D.C.; Ray and Betty Miller, Grace Brethren Church, Toledo, Ohio; Tyrone and Chari Curtis, Calvary Grace Brethren Church, Dayton, Ohio; Ron and Chery Boehm, VisionOhio, and Tony and Cathy Webb, VisionOhio.

Stephen Joyce is leading the effort and the group plans to meet again in February 2011.

Tony requests prayer for this fledgling movement within the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches. “Pray for the harvest and workers in it, particularly in the African-American communities in Ohio,” he says. “Pray for each member of the team and for the networking side of the equation.”

Jerry Young With the Lord

Jerry and Loreen Young

Jerry Young, longtime retired Grace Brethren pastor of the Lititz, Penna., Grace Brethren church and most recently director for the Association of Grace Brethren Ministers, went to be with the Lord at about 1 a.m. today, Wednesday, December 8. The last several years he had been battling with cancer. Reproduced here is the Caring Bridge site information from Jerry’s wife, Loreen.  A full obituary will be posted when it is available.

Well a very early good morning to you. It is 4:30 a.m.  Here is the story.

Last Tuesday I finally knew I was not able to handle Jerry staying at the house any longer, it was getting too difficult as he continued to decline.  I felt the loving thing to do was to  place him in Hospice last Tuesday night and and he had great care there.  As he continued to decline over the past week I knew that I had made the right decision.  As of today he had not eaten in 14 days nor had anything to drink for 7 days and was really suffering.

One morning he said, “I have been praying and praying and I just want to go home.  Why is it taking so long?”  So after one week at hospice he became unconscious yesterday and today, and then he was finally released into the hands of Jesus early this morning at 1 a.m.

Janae and Allison have been here with me for the past week so I called  Allison to come in to pick me up after we both spent some time with Jerry saying our good byes.  He has suffered so much this past year and he wanted to be with home with Jesus and it was breaking my heart to see him like this, so I was also ready for him to be with Jesus, but that sure did not make it any easier for me.

Right now we are planning to see visitors at  Lititz Grace Brethren Church next Saturday Dec. 18 as a drop-in, but no open casket.  Then the memorial service will be on Sunday afternoon the 19th  but do not have the times yet for those.  The graveside service will be at the Indiantown  Gap Military Cemetery on Monday the 20th for just the family.

I look forward to seeing many of you dear friends in PA and just say thank you so much to all of you for praying for us for this past year.  And so many of your responses usually bring tears as you recall memories of my wonderful husband of so many years.  What a huge blessing he has been to SO many people.  And now I am thankful he was raised up on wings of eagles and is in Jesus loving arms.  Thank you God.  Love you all so much.  Blessings to all of you.
