Tracts Keep Spreading the Gospel

Posted by Terry White on June 14, 2011  |  No Comments

When the semi-trailer backed up to the BMH loading dock today, it brought a new printing of several hundred thousand copies of BMH’s premier gospel tract, “Life’s Most Important Question.”

More than five million copies of the tract are now in print, in version that include King James scriptures (KJV), New International Version (NIV), and Spanish. The original version of the tract was generated out of an evangelistic campaign in Africa in the 1970s directed by GBIM missionary Wayne Beaver.

Periodic reports come in to the BMH office of people who have effectively used the tract in witness, and of people who have found a relationship with Christ through it. BMH is grateful for the financial and prayer support which make it possible to produce life-changing literature that has lasting effect for Christ’s kingdom.

Biblical Counseling Coalition Reviews BMH Book

Posted by Liz Cutler Gates on May 24, 2011  |  No Comments

The Biblical Counseling Coalition, an organization that seeks to build strong relationships among the leaders in the biblical counseling movement, has reviewed the BMH book, God’s Healing for Life’s Losses. A portion is included below. To read the complete review, click here.

A Biblical Guide for Grieving with Hope

Grief is an experience that one out of every one person will face. Actually, it is worse than that. We all experience grief multiple times throughout our lives. Unfortunately, the more people we love the more times we will experience significant grief.

In the midst of the pain we often ask ourselves, “To love or not to love (if we have a Shakespearian bent)?” “Is it really worth it to love if it means having to hurt like this (if we talk normal)?” Either way, we are tempted to consider not loving as the better option. In our moments of pain and confusion it just feels safer.

Dr. Bob Kellemen has written an excellent book to guide us biblically and relationally through this difficult (and often repetitive) season of life. The quality of the book is such that it warrants an endorsement from GriefShare, an organization devoted to developing Christ-centered grief support groups. They have included Dr. Kellemen on their panel of experts for interviews shown in thousands of grief recovery groups across the world every week.

Help for the Hurting at the Holidays

Help for the Hurting at the Holidays

Holidays… They’re supposed to make us think of words like thankful, merry, and happy. We’re supposed to associate holidays with a phrase like “Home for the Holidays!”

But… what if a loved one is not coming home this holiday season? What if death, divorce, or distance causes us to associate the holidays with words and feelings like depression, anxiety, and stress?
Holidays can create fresh memories of our loss and a fresh experience of pain and grief. The thought of facing another holiday season causes some people to wish they could sleep from the Wednesday before Thanksgiving until January 2.

Loss is always hard, and at the holidays it can seem crushing. The thought of being in a festive mood for two months is just too much to bear when our heart is breaking.

BMH Author Robert Kellemen has prepared a resource for those who have experienced a loss during the holidays. It’s based on his BMH book,  God’s Healing for Life’s Losses. Read Healing for the Holidays by clicking here.

Scriptural Guidance on Cremation Available

Posted by Terry White on December 1, 2010  |  No Comments

Funeral customs in the U.S. are undergoing rapid change, particularly in regards to the acceptance of cremation.  According to a Scripps-Howard release, more than a third of the 2.5 million Americans who die this year likely will be cremated rather than being buried in a casket.

The Cremation Association of North America points out that the percent of bodies cremated first reached double digits in the 1980s, and it estimates that by the year 2025 cremation will account for the disposition of nearly 60 percent of all bodies.

People choose cremation over burial for a number of reasons, including lower cost, more suitability to a mobile society, and it is considered more environmentally friendly.

However, historically, most religious communities in America considered cremation to be heathen in the 19th century, according to Stephen Prothero, professor of religion at Boston University.  Since then, many religious attitudes toward cremation have changed, but many Christians are still unsure whether scripture gives discernible guidance on the issue.

Dr. John J. Davis, professor of Old Testament and Hebrew and former president of Grace College and Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana, wrote a short book in the late 1990s entitled “What About Cremation?  A Christian Perspective.” The book has just been re-issued by BMH Books of Winona Lake, and is now available for shipping.

Davis carefully examines the nature, history, and contemporary utilization of cremation against the background of the Bible. His goal is to help believers form guidelines for Christian thought and practice in dealing with the arguments for and against cremation of the dead.

Particularly helpful is the final chapter, which suggests some needed reforms to modern funeral practices as they relate to the Christian church. The book includes generous documentation, scripture references, and a helpful bibliography.

The 128-page paperback retails for $8.95, and the ISBN number is 978-0-88469-276-8. For more information log onto www.bmhbooks.com or call toll-free at 1-800-348-2756.  The book is also available wherever books are sold online or in stores.

BMH Books Announces ‘God of Hope’ Launch

Posted by Terry White on November 17, 2010  |  No Comments

J. Davis Illingworth has a successful automotive career behind him, a big vision for reaching the world for Christ, and an ambitious product-plan ahead of him that is beginning to unfold.  The first two products in Illingworth’s “God of Hope” project, a 153-page paperback book and its accompanying study/discussion guide, have just been released by BMH Books of Winona Lake, Ind.

Through the first-person testimonies of the disciple Thomas, the prophet Moses, the apostle Paul and the disciple John, God of Hope brings to life the energy, passion, and brilliance of God’s mysterious plan for the universe and humanity as it is unfolding in history.

God’s story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. In the book Moses tells the beginning, Thomas and Paul tell the middle, and John tells how the story will end. It is a story of hope versus despair, good versus evil, truth versus lies, love versus hate, life versus death.

These stirring accounts will inspire Christians to greater courage and trust in God, and can also lead nonbelievers to faith by introducing them to the hope available from the one true God. This overview of God’s plan, as well as the author’s compelling presentation of his own story, invite readers to consider the story of their own lives and to reflect on how that fits into God’s plan for humanity.

About the book, Grace College and Seminary president Ronald Manahan said, “God’s story is the big story in this book and the reason for hope.  With gripping transparency the author tells his own story of struggling with and trusting in the God of hope.  Dave Illingworth’s story invites the reader to turn from despair and loss of hope to God’s story of hope through His Son.”

Darrell Waltrip, NASCAR champion, Hall of Fame nominee and Fox broadcaster, said, “This project is so Dave–it covers all the bases and pays close attention to detail. I love the way it connects my story, His story, and your story. God of Hope will reach many souls and make a huge difference in believers’ and non-believers’ lives.”

The author, J. Davis (Dave) Illingworth, Jr., was formerly Senior Vice President and Chief Planning and Administrative Officer of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. In this position he was responsible for Finance, Corporate Services, Business Planning, Human Resources, Information Systems, Strategic and Product Planning, Advanced Product Strategy, Telematics, Legal, University of Toyota, and Motorsports.

Illingworth joined Toyota in 1980. He was with Lexus from the division’s inception in January 1987 through 1992, and he was instrumental in making Lexus an industry leader in customer satisfaction, sales, and quality. Most recently, Illingworth was senior vice president and general manager for the Toyota Division from 1992 to 1997, overseeing sales and marketing.

In recognition of his work, Illingworth was named Automotive News All-Star for 1997; Automobile Magazine’s 1992 “Man of the Year” for his leadership of the new Lexus Division; and one of the auto industry’s “Top 10 Newsmakers” by Automotive News. One of the vehicles he oversaw, the Camry, earned the title of America’s best-selling car in 1997.

A graduate of Ohio University in Athens, Illingworth earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and is a former member of the Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees.  At age 65, Dave retired from Toyota and now lives in Winona Lake, Indiana, with his wife, Cynthia, and is the Toyota dealer in the nearby town of Warsaw. The Illingworths have raised five children.

The discussion study guide that accompanies the book, designed for use by small groups, Adult Bible Fellowships, and individual study, includes stimulating discussion questions and was created by Jesse Deloe, who has worked with BMH Books as senior editor for a number of years.

The book retails for $14.95 and its ISBN number is 978-0-88469-271-3. The study guide, ISBN  978-0-88469-275-1, retails for $4.95 and both publications are available at www.bmhbooks.com, by calling 1-800-348-2756, or from local or online booksellers.

The book and study guide are the first of a series of products which will eventually include an e-book, an audio book, a music CD, and a full video DVD version, featuring top-flight professional actors and singers. More on the God of Hope project and access to future products may be obtained at www.godofhope.net.

An additional newspaper article about Illingworth and his project may be seen by clicking here. (page 2).
